Why electric scooters don't need a license
Vietnam's Road Traffic Order and Safety Law 2024 (No. 36/2024/QH15, in force since 1 January 2025) requires a driving license for every motor vehicle except mopeds. A moped (xe gắn máy) is a two-wheeler with a top design speed of up to 50 km/h; for electric models the motor is up to 4 kW.
Our electric scooters are in this moped class, so you can ride them in Vietnam without a license. Everything else still applies: wear your helmet, no alcohol or beer when riding, and strictly follow Vietnamese traffic law.
Gas scooters need a valid license
The Honda Vision 110cc and Honda Air Blade 125cc are motorcycles above 50cc. To ride them you need a motorbike license that is valid under Vietnamese law — category A1 covers bikes up to 125cc.
If you are visiting from abroad, check before your trip whether your license is valid in Vietnam. Not sure? The electric scooter is the simple choice: same price, no license.
No license? What an electric scooter can do in Da Lat
- Good for: the city centre, Xuan Huong Lake, cafés, the night market and nearby sights.
- Battery: one battery lasts about 25–30 km, and each scooter comes with 2 batteries — about 50–60 km in total. We swap in a full battery at the shop for 20,000 VND.
- Avoid: long, steep climbs such as Prenn Pass, Mimosa Pass and the road up Lang Biang. For those, riders with a valid license take the Air Blade 125cc.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a license for an electric scooter in Vietnam?
Not for an electric moped — one with a top speed of up to 50 km/h and a motor of up to 4 kW. Our electric scooters are in this class, so no license is needed. You must be at least 16.
Can I rent a gas scooter in Da Lat without a license?
Vietnamese law requires a valid motorbike license for gas scooters such as the Honda Vision and Air Blade, so at Van Phu we rent them only to riders with a valid license. Without one, take an electric scooter.
Is my license from home valid in Vietnam?
Only a license that is valid under Vietnamese law counts. The rules depend on the country that issued it, so check before you travel. If you are not sure, rent an electric scooter.
Is an electric scooter enough to explore Da Lat?
For the city and nearby sights, yes. One battery lasts about 25–30 km, each scooter comes with 2 batteries (about 50–60 km in total), and a battery swap at the shop costs 20,000 VND. For long, steep passes a 125cc gas scooter is better.
Does the electric scooter cost less?
No — every bike is 150,000 VND per day, with a helmet and phone holder included.
