Why checking matters in Da Lat
Da Lat is a hilly city: long downhill streets, sharp bends, cool damp mornings and sudden rain. Brakes, tyres and lights work harder here than on flat roads. Whoever you rent from, take a few minutes before you leave. A good rental shop will be happy to go through it with you.
The 10-point checklist
- 1. Front and rear brakes. Squeeze each lever; it should feel firm and stop the wheel without the lever touching the grip. Try them gently while rolling slowly.
- 2. Tyres. Look for visible tread, no cracks or bulges, and press to check they are not soft. Good tyres matter on wet, steep streets.
- 3. Lights. Headlight (low and high beam), tail light and brake light. Fog and early dark are common in Da Lat.
- 4. Turn signals and horn. You will use both all the time in Vietnamese traffic.
- 5. Mirrors. Both present, firm and adjusted for you before you start.
- 6. Helmet. It should fit snugly, the strap must click shut, and the visor (if any) should be clear. Ask for a different size if it moves.
- 7. Fuel. Look at the gauge and ask how much is in the tank so you know when to stop at a petrol station.
- 8. Starting and throttle. The engine should start easily and the throttle should spring back when you let go.
- 9. Stand and seat. The side or centre stand should hold the bike firmly; the seat should lock and the storage box should open.
- 10. Video of the bike's condition. Walk around the bike and film every side, including existing scratches, with the shop owner present. It protects both of you.

Also agree on the rules
Checking the bike is half of the job; the other half is knowing the terms. Before you sign or pay, make sure you understand the price per day, until what time the rental day lasts, what you leave instead of a deposit, and who to call if something goes wrong. Clear, written terms are a good sign. Our step-by-step rental guide explains how it works with us.
How we do it at Van Phu
Before every rental we do a short test ride with you and film the bike's condition together. Every bike — Honda Vision 110cc, Honda Air Blade 125cc or electric scooter — costs 150,000 VND per day, the rental day runs from pickup until 21:00, and there is no cash deposit: you leave a passport or ID card. Helmets are free, every bike has a phone holder, and gas scooters come with 1 liter of fuel. Picking an electric scooter? It has a few extra points to look at — see what to check when picking up an electric scooter.

On the road
- Vietnam drives on the right. Take the first few minutes slowly on quiet streets to get used to the bike.
- Use both brakes gently on long downhill roads.
- If anything feels wrong — a noise, soft brakes, a warning light — stop safely and message the shop.
- No alcohol or beer when riding, and strictly follow Vietnamese traffic law.
