What the rainy season is really like
Da Lat's rainy season runs roughly from May to October–November. It rarely rains all day: mornings are often dry and fresh, and heavy but fairly short showers tend to arrive in the afternoon. Some days stay grey and drizzly, and after heavy rain the hills stay wet for hours. So renting a motorbike in Da Lat in the rainy season works well — you simply ride the longer parts of your plan in the morning and keep the afternoon flexible.
Plan your day around the showers
- Leave early and do the out-of-town ride first; aim to be back in the centre by early afternoon.
- Keep a café, an indoor sight or the market as your "shower stop" — waiting 30–60 minutes is often all it takes.
- After a night of heavy rain, skip waterfalls with steep paths and long mountain passes; choose sights in town instead.
- Check the forecast the evening before, and message us — we see the local weather every morning.
Ideas for wet afternoons are in our article what to do in Da Lat on a rainy day.
What to wear and bring
- A proper raincoat or poncho (áo mưa) — they are sold cheaply in shops and markets all over town. Keep it under the seat.
- A warm layer: wet clothes plus wind on the bike make Da Lat feel cold.
- Shoes with grip, or sandals with straps — not loose flip-flops.
- A plastic bag or waterproof case for your phone and passport copy.

Riding wet hills safely
- Double your braking distance and brake gently with both brakes, before bends rather than in them.
- Painted road markings, metal covers and smooth concrete get very slippery when wet; red mud and sand wash onto the edges of hill roads.
- Never ride through deep or flowing water — you can't see what's underneath.
- Turn your headlight on in rain and fog, ride slower than usual and keep more distance from the vehicle in front.
- If the rain becomes very heavy, pull off safely and wait under a roof — never under a tree in a storm.
- No alcohol or beer when riding, and strictly follow Vietnamese traffic law. Vietnam drives on the right.
Which bike in the rainy season?
The Honda Air Blade 125cc is the steadiest choice for hills and longer rides in the wet. The Honda Vision 110cc is light and easy in town. An electric scooter is fine for short city rides in light rain — read our tips on the electric scooter in the rain. Whatever you choose, check the tyres and brakes during the test ride at pick-up; we film the bike's condition together before you leave.
