What dã quỳ is and when it blooms
Dã quỳ (Tithonia diversifolia), often called wild sunflower or Mexican sunflower, is a tall shrub with bright yellow flowers that grows wild along roads, slopes and forest edges across Vietnam's Central Highlands. Around Da Lat it usually flowers from late October to December, with the fullest bloom around mid-November. The timing shifts a little every year depending on the rain, so it's worth asking locals what's happening right now — we're happy to tell you.
The bloom comes at the end of the rainy season: showers become less frequent, mornings are often clear and the sky is deep blue — perfect for photos of yellow flowers against green pine hills.
Where to see wild sunflowers around Da Lat
You don't need a special farm or a ticket — dã quỳ grows along many roads just outside the city. A few easy directions:
- Towards Tuyen Lam Lake (south, about 5–7 km) — roadside bushes between pine forests; easy to combine with Datanla Waterfall and Truc Lam Monastery.
- Trai Mat and Linh Phuoc Pagoda (east, about 8 km) — quiet village roads with flowers on the hillsides.
- Towards Lang Biang and Lac Duong (north, about 10–12 km) — open valleys and slopes with yellow patches.
- The road to the Cau Dat tea hills (east, about 20–25 km) — a longer ride with tea, pines and flowers along the way.

A half-day wild sunflower ride
A relaxed plan: leave the center around 7–8 am, ride towards Tuyen Lam Lake and stop for photos wherever the flowers are thickest. Have a coffee by the lake and head back before lunch — afternoon showers are still possible in November. With a full day, add Trai Mat or the tea hills in the afternoon if the weather stays dry.
Photo tips
- The best light is early morning and late afternoon; at midday the yellow looks flat.
- Shoot from a low angle against the sky, or use a pine forest as the background.
- Bees love dã quỳ — move calmly and don't wave your hands around the flowers.
- Many bushes grow on private land and at the edge of farms: don't trample crops, don't climb fences and please don't pick the flowers.
Safety on the road
- Never stop on a bend or in the middle of the road for a photo — pull fully off the road where other drivers can see you from both directions.
- In bloom season many riders slow down suddenly to look at the flowers, so keep your distance.
- November mornings are cool: bring a jacket and gloves, and keep a raincoat under the seat.
- For hilly roads out of town the Honda Air Blade 125 is the most comfortable choice.
- No alcohol when riding, and strictly follow Vietnamese traffic law.
