What “cloud hunting” means
Săn mây — “cloud hunting” — is what Vietnamese travellers call getting up before dawn to watch low clouds and mist fill the valleys around Da Lat. The city sits at about 1,500 metres, and on cool, humid mornings the clouds settle below the hilltops. From the right spot you look down on a white sea with pine ridges sticking out of it, while the sun rises behind. It usually lasts only an hour or two before the warmth burns it away.
When you have the best chance
- Season: clouds can appear in many months. The rainy season (roughly May–November) brings humid mornings and often the thickest clouds; the cool mornings at the end of the year are also good. In the middle of the dry season skies are often clear — beautiful sunrises, but fewer clouds.
- Weather: the best mornings usually follow a rainy evening or night, with still air. Dry, windy mornings often have no clouds at all.
- Time: be in place around 4:30–6:30. The show often starts before the sun comes up, so don't aim to arrive exactly at sunrise.
Clouds are never guaranteed. Check the forecast the evening before and keep a backup plan — even without clouds, a Da Lat sunrise is worth getting up for.
Where to go
Our free cloud-hunting and sunrise map shows 8 spots with directions. The main options:
- Xuan Huong Lake and Tuyen Lam Lake — no early climb: mist over the water at dawn. Xuan Huong is in the city centre; Tuyen Lam is about 5 km south as the crow flies, among pine hills. Easy places to start.
- Thien Phuc Duc Hill — north of the centre, known for its lone pine and a wide view over the city. The last part is a short, steep walk.
- Da Phu Hill — an open hilltop above the forest north-west of town; on good mornings clouds fill the valley below. The final stretch is steep: park at the bottom and walk up.
- Hon Bo Hill — the highest hill east of town, with sunrise over Thai Phien flower village. The last bit is steep red dirt — walk it rather than ride it.
- Cau Dat tea hills — about 20–25 km by road, east of Da Lat: tea rows with clouds over the valley. A paid cloud-hunting viewpoint there opens at 4:30. See our Cau Dat sunrise guide.
- Lang Biang (Radar Peak) — the highest viewpoint near Da Lat, but it opens later in the morning, so go there for morning views rather than sunrise.
What time to leave
Sunrise in Da Lat is usually between about 5:15 and 6:00, depending on the season. For the hills close to town, leave around 4:45–5:00; for Cau Dat, leave the centre around 4:15–4:30. Add time for walking the last steep part and for finding a spot before others arrive, especially on weekends.
What to wear and bring
- A warm jacket, long trousers, gloves and closed shoes — before dawn it is cold, and the wind on the bike makes it colder.
- A raincoat: paths and roads are often wet after a rainy night.
- A charged phone with the route saved offline, a small torch or phone light for the walk, and water.
- Some cash, as a few viewpoints charge an entrance fee.
Riding safely in the dark
- Ride slowly with your headlight on; fog can make visibility very short.
- Keep to the right and watch for early trucks and farm vehicles on the hill roads.
- Roads can be slippery after rain — brake gently and slow down before every bend.
- Never stop on the road to take photos; pull fully off the road.
- No alcohol or beer when riding, and strictly follow Vietnamese traffic law.
Renting a bike for a sunrise ride
Our shop opens at 4:30 am, but it's easiest to pick up the bike the day before so you can leave straight from your hotel. For the hills near town, any of our bikes works, including an electric scooter (one battery lasts about 35–40 km). For Cau Dat, Hon Bo or Lang Biang, take a gas scooter — the Honda Air Blade 125cc is the most comfortable on hills. Every bike is 150,000 VND per day with no cash deposit, a free helmet and a phone holder. See our rental page, and message us on WhatsApp the evening before — we're happy to tell you what the mornings have been like.
